To live like a VIP it’s not enough to look like one (by checking out my fashion and beauty tips) but it would help if you smelled like one too. How? Not by buying the cheap mass-manufactured £19.99 bottles of celebrity perfume in ugly coloured bottles that you find in your local chemist. And probably not by using the brands of shampoos they model for (using L’Oreal is probably not going to turn you into Cheryl Tweedy). The most powerful way of ensuring there is a whiff of your fave celeb around your person is to pick your scented candles carefully. Seriously.
Think about it, if you have a candle burning in the background of your home / workplace then it’s going to cling to everything in the room. Your clothes and your hair will naturally end up with the scent that’s coming from the candle so personally I’m walking away from the 2 for £1 deals in Ikea in favour of copying how the celebrities do it. To be perfectly honest, this did happen by accident as I got my first DipyTique candle in a goody bag after a party at Harvey Nichols, but it illuminated (‘scuse the pun) a passion for luxury in the homewares department.
I personally like sexy, sensual smells but I know some of you prefer invigorating citrus and fruit smells. So I’ve done a bit of research into what candles the stars are loving right now.
BEST FOR CITRUS…JO MALONE ORANGE BLOSSOM
The Duchess of Cambridge fragranced Westminster Abbey with tons of Jo Malone candles when she wed Prince William. Dannii Minogue and Amanda Holden have them in their dressing rooms and their homes and Gwen Stefani carries them around wherever she goes so she has a familiar smell to remind her of home. And did I mention Kate uses them? To be honest, if it’s good enough for the wife of one future King and mother of another it’s good enough for me. Buy at the Jo Malone website for £39
BEST FOR ROSES…DIPYTIQUE ROSE
Kate Moss, Madonna and Jennifer Lopez swear by the relaxing scent of Diptique rose. It’s made from several blends of rose so it’s less one dimensional rose than your Grandma may use. Rose is sophisticated and elegant (so not entirely sure why Kate Moss likes it) but it lingers for ages. One candle will burn for 45 hours, which sort of justifies the£40 price. See the Diptyque website
BEST FOR A CLEAN / FRESH SMELL – ECOYA SWEET PEA AND JASMINE
Victoria Beckham was gifted Ecoya candles when she was pregnant with Harper and she’s used them ever since. Sweet pea and jasmine sounds like a gorgeous combinatio that would smell like newborn babies and fresh linen. As an added bonus Ecoya, like the name suggests, is all ec0-friendly and natural. Buy it in the UK at Liberty’s or on the Liberty’s website here
BEST FOR AFFORDABLE LUXURY – DI PANNO FIG AND WHITE GRAPE
I was invited to a press day recently by Flare PR and I was blown away (again excuse the pun) by the smell and the price of this. It’s about half the price of the other candles I’ve listed above (£20) but it still burns for 30 hours. This gorgeous candle in a wooden bowl is made from vegetable wax and releases a sensual fragrance of grape and gardenia; ripe fig; orange blossom and mimosa, on a base of sandalwood, amber and vanilla. I think the bowl makes it look so classy compared to the plain glass packaging of the other candles. It’s available in John Lewis and from the Di Palomo website
